Expedia Rosie's Tourism Attachment Program

Thank you Expedia Group & Rosie Holidays for making this possible.

As part of our pledge for 2020, we committed to identify, select and provide the opportunity for 3 high school graduates to pursue an opportunity in the travel industry in Fiji. Pictured above and taken at Rosie's Academy, our 3 students: Makitalena, Martin, Peter (of Koroipita), Samantha (from Expedia), Avlyn (Left to Right)

The team at Koroipita selected three students to participate in the first ever ERTAS: Expedia Rosie’s Tourism Attachment Scheme, which identified students with a passion for a career in the travel industry and have shown strong commitment to pursuing these dreams. The goal behind the program is to provide theory and computer skills from the Rosie academy and once the rigorous training program is completed, the students will receive practical training for six months working at a hotel property in Fiji. All three students not unlike any other time in their life, had to work just a little bit harder and make more sacrifices to complete the training course, but they all proved their exceptional ability and commitment to succeed.

The three young Koroipitans who were selected all have their own very different backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common, a determination to better themselves and support their families.

Avlyn Nand

Avlyn has been living in Koroipita with her single mother and sister for the past 5 years. Her father’s sudden passing had left the family in a very difficult financial situation which brought them to Koroipita. Since being here Avlyn has always been an influential teenager, taking part in youth activities and helping as a volunteer to build two houses in 2017. Avlyn has always wanted to pursue a career in Tourism, but when she missed the National Toppers Scholarship to study tourism, things looked challenging. The ERTAS program has enabled her to continue learning and having an opportunity to move closer to following her career dreams. Avlyn’s skills were immediately recognized by her instructor at the Rosie’s Academy, and she excelled in all areas of the program. Avlyn has taken up the role of Computer School supervisor at Koroipita.

Makitalena Biau

Makitalena has been living in Koroipita with her parents and four siblings for the past 10 years. Her father is a farmer, and mom sells the produce at the Lautoka market. Before living in Koroipita, her opportunities to study were limited, and as a result she was challenged academically. She found her place at the Drada Secondary School for vocational studies in Hospitality where she realized the opportunities that she had in this industry. Makitalena completed the Rosie’s Academy and is still helping mom and dad at home to support the family.

Martin Tama

Martin is the eldest of eight siblings living with their single mom in Koroipita. Martin struggled with academic performance at mainstream education as he had certain learning difficulties. He attended a school to support his needs and in his final year at Sunshine School for Special Education (2019) he earned the leadership distinction of Head Boy.

After finishing his education Martin began to look for means to support his family. He did so by farming, fishing and through part-time jobs. He always however wanted to work in the tourism industry.

Martin did exceptionally well at the Rosie’s Academy. The program was extremely helpful in building Martin's communications skills and helped tremendously boost his self-confidence. Martin is currently working with the Koroipita Honey Group at Koroipita.

COVID-19 has affected so many of us in different ways. For these three students the impact of the virus has meant that the opportunity to work at a resort in Fiji after finishing their program at the Rosie’s Academy is now on hold. While this must be very disappointing for all of them, these kids are used to the challenges that life brings, and their commitment and resolve to make their lives better and supporting those of their families, will make them more determined to take full advantage of this opportunity when they can. We want to continue to give more opportunities to people living in Koroipita such as these three inspirational young people.
