About Koroipita

One of our most basic needs as human beings is to have housing and personal safety for ourselves and our families, unfortunately these needs are not met for so many people around the world. Situated near Lautoka, Viti Levu, Fiji Koroipita satisfies this need for many under privileged Fijian families. Koroipita also offers its residents the opportunity to dream and live beyond basic needs, by providing education, training, and civil structure, with the ultimate goal towards moving families above the poverty line and out of Koroipita village.

The town, currently with 241 homes, is the brainchild of Peter Drysdale, a man with a compulsive vision and love for humanity like very few.  Peter first saw the need to help after a devastating cycle destroyed many informal housing structures in Fiji in 1985.  Initially Peter and anyone that followed him started traveling around the main Island of Fiji, Viti Levu, and where they found need they constructed specially designed cyclone proof houses. The initial objectives were “to eliminate sub-human living conditions in west Viti Levu by providing basic cyclone-safe homes, clean water and living essentials”.

the Model Towns Charitable Trust under Peter’s leadership has been able to develop an environment where residents are provided with housing, education, opportunities and a future for them and their families. Soon to grow to 266 homes, It is a model that can be replicated all over the world to uplift those that are impoverished and climate change refugees. 

 

What Peter has been able to achieve over that last 20 years is truly remarkable, but they need support  to allow them to continue to allow children to attend kindergarten, primary, secondary and eventually tertiary education - aiming for a future with no limits! We created this forum, to share our experience working with the team and people of Koroipita, how it has impacted and enriched our lives, and inspired us to share this with you and encourage you to Get Involved!
